Samsung Heavy Industries has won a contract worth approximately $226m to build two Very Large Gas Carriers, according to a LinkedIn post by Alexei Bykov. The order, valued at KRW 307.4bn, was placed by an undisclosed Bermuda-based shipowner and the contract was signed on 29 Sep 2026. Under the terms of the agreement, payments will be made in stages tied to shipbuilding progress, a common structure in newbuild contracts that spreads financial risk across the construction timeline. Delivery of the two VLGCs is scheduled to extend through February 2030, giving Samsung Heavy Industries roughly three and a half years to complete the vessels. Very Large Gas Carriers are used to transport liquefied petroleum gas and other gas cargoes in large volumes, and demand for such vessels has remained a steady part of South Korean shipyards' order books amid broader shifts in global energy trade. The identity of the Bermuda-based customer has not been disclosed, a practice not uncommon in shipbuilding contracts involving special-purpose ownership structures. The contract adds to Samsung Heavy Industries' order backlog in the gas carrier segment, reinforcing the yard's position in a shipbuilding market where South Korean builders continue to compete for high-value LPG and LNG carrier contracts against rivals in China and elsewhere.
