Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) has placed its first order with Hengli Heavy Industry as part of its ongoing newbuilding program. The shipping giant has committed to a series of 10 LNG dual-fuelled containerships, each with a capacity of 21,000 TEU. Deliveries are expected in 2027.This latest development follows the strategic cooperation framework agreement signed between MSC and Hengli in August. The agreement covers various areas, including newbuilds, engine manufacturing, ship repair, and vessel retrofitting, highlighting both parties' long-term collaboration goals.

Although the financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, industry estimates suggest the order could exceed $2.5 billion, based on current shipbuilding trends. This order marks a significant step in MSC's expansion strategy and commitment to sustainable shipping solutions through the adoption of LNG dual-fuel technology. MSC continues to reinforce its position as the world’s largest container line with this substantial fleet expansion.
