Germany-based Gerdes Green has committed to the construction of an additional hybrid combi freighter at the Dutch shipbuilder Damen, reinforcing its position in the sustainable shipping sector. The new 3,850 dwt general cargo vessel, the second of its kind, is being developed through a collaboration between Reederei Gerdes, Over-C, and vessel charterer Cargill.

This strategic move by Gerdes Green is supported by a subsidy from the German Government, aimed at enhancing the environmental performance of maritime transport. The funding will enable the incorporation of several advanced technologies designed to improve efficiency and minimize the ecological impact of the new vessel.

Key features of the freighter include a battery-driven propulsion system, which allows for reduced fuel consumption and emissions, as well as a shore power connection to further decrease the vessel's carbon footprint while docked. The ship is also capable of operating on B100 biodiesel, a sustainable fuel alternative, and will be equipped with wind-assisted propulsion, harnessing wind energy to aid in navigation.This initiative highlights Gerdes Green’s commitment to innovation in green shipping, aligning with broader industry efforts to transition towards more sustainable maritime practices.
