Höegh Autoliners has ordered six additional dual-fuel, zero-carbon-ready Aurora class vessels, extending its newbuilding programme to a total of 18 ships. The new vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031 and will be built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. (CMHI), the same yard constructing the rest of the series. The company has also secured an option to build four further vessels on the same terms, along with slot reservations for another four ships at the same yard. This gives Höegh Autoliners flexibility to expand its Aurora fleet to as many as 26 vessels, counting the twelve already delivered or on order. Each Aurora class vessel carries DNV's ammonia- and methanol-ready notation, with main engines supplied by Everllence and bridge systems from Kongsberg Maritime. The ships can carry up to 9,100 cars and cut carbon emissions by up to 58% compared with conventional pure car and truck carriers. CEO Andreas Enger said the Aurora newbuilds have shown strong earnings potential, carbon performance, cargo flexibility and future conversion capability. He added that the newbuilding programme secures capacity costs at competitive levels, supporting profitable operations even during periods of lower freight rates, while strengthening the company's position to capture growth in the Asian market and meet evolving customer demand.
