Hengli Heavy Industries has signed contracts for 11 very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) within one week, spanning capacities of 88,000, 90,000 and 93,000 cbm. The Chinese shipbuilder says the deals cement its status as the world's largest VLAC orderbook holder by vessel count. The identities of the shipowners, along with detailed vessel specifications, contract prices and delivery schedules, have not been disclosed. The new orders mark the latest step in Hengli's rapid diversification across shipbuilding segments. The yard delivered its first bulk carrier in 2024 and its first VLCC in 2025, before launching its first 93,000-cbm VLAC in June 2026. That progression has been underpinned by parent-backed projects and repeat orders from international shipowners. Hengli points to its in-house cargo-tank manufacturing capability and licensed engine production as central to supporting its growing gas-carrier programme. The yard's expanding VLAC presence gives international owners another option as they weigh fleet renewal decisions, with interest spanning both established LPG trades and the emerging market for ammonia transport linked to future low-carbon fuel supply chains.
