Transpetro has signed a US$427 million contract for the construction of four new vessels at the Rio Grande Shipyard (Estaleiro Rio Grande) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The agreement forms part of the state-controlled company's fleet renewal programme and covers vessels designed for the transport of petroleum products. According to Transpetro, the new ships will be equipped to operate in electrified ports and will
be capable of running on biofuels in the future, reflecting broader efforts to reduce emissions in maritime oil transport. The order adds to the shipyard's workload and represents a fresh round of large-vessel construction contracts within Brazil's shipbuilding sector. The contract is being positioned as a boost to the domestic naval industry, which has sought new orders to sustain shipyard capacity and employment. Transpetro, the logistics arm of Petrobras responsible for pipeline and tanker operations, has been pursuing a modernization strategy aimed at replacing older vessels in its fleet with ships built to newer environmental and operational standards. The project underscores continued investment in Brazil's maritime transport infrastructure for oil and petroleum products, as the company works to align its fleet with future port and fuel requirements.
