HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a launching ceremony on 18 Aug 2026 for Chimbote, the Peruvian Navy's first new landing support ship, jointly built with Peru's SIMA shipyard at the SIMA facility. The event marks the company's first successful joint construction of a naval vessel overseas. Peru President Keiko Fujimori led the ceremony, which was also attended by Peruvian Navy Commander in Chief Federico Javier Bravo de Rueda Delgado, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Peru Choi Jong-uk, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries President Joo Won-ho, and officials from both governments. Chimbote is
the first of two landing support ships built under a contract HD Hyundai Heavy Industries secured in April 2024, covering four vessels in total, including a frigate, an offshore patrol vessel and the two landing support ships. The second ship, Talara, completed its on-land construction process earlier this month. Chimbote and Talara, named after Peruvian port cities, are multipurpose vessels intended for transporting personnel and supplies, logistics support, and disaster and emergency response. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries provided design and technical support while SIMA handled block production, assembly, outfitting, testing and sea trials using local facilities. The company said the project shifts its export model from delivering finished ships to local joint production through technology transfer, a format it expects more countries to require going forward. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries credited government-level support, including the Ministry of National Defense, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, the Embassy of Korea in Peru and KOTRA, for facilitating the deal. The company is also conducting basic design work for Peru's planned 1,500-ton next-generation submarine, aiming to begin construction of the lead ship after the design phase concludes.
