Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd. signed a shipbuilding contract with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. on 14 Aug 2026 for four 1,900 TEU container vessels, marking the start of the project's implementation phase. The vessels were designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and measure approximately 171.95 metres in overall length with a beam of 27.5 metres. They are tailored for shipping operations
on designated regional waterways across Asia. The ships comply fully with the International Maritime Organization's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) emission reduction standards, and are designed for low fuel consumption, high energy efficiency and large cargo capacity, positioning them as environmentally friendly vessels. Beyond the firm order for four newbuildings, the contract also includes an option for two additional vessels of the same design. Ningbo Ocean Shipping retains the flexibility to decide whether to exercise this option within an agreed timeframe, depending on market conditions and operational requirements, allowing scope for future fleet expansion. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the vessels are classified as feeder-type container ships running on conventional fuel, with each unit valued at approximately USD 31 million. The four firm vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2029.
