Ferguson Marine, Scotland's publicly-owned shipyard, has confirmed it will not bid to build the replacement for MV Lord of the Isles due to eligibility rules set by Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL). The procurement criteria require shipyards to have delivered at least two vessels over 75m in the past five years, excluding ongoing projects, which
effectively disqualifies Ferguson Marine and other UK yards. Ferguson's chief executive Graeme Thomson criticized the lack of social value scoring in the tender process, arguing it disadvantages UK shipbuilders against subsidized foreign competitors. The GMB union called on CMAL to pause and review the tendering process, stating it appears designed to send contracts overseas. CMAL defended its selection system, saying it aims to ensure the best outcome for island communities. Ferguson Marine, the last shipyard on the lower Clyde, has built about half of CalMac's large vessels but struggles to compete on cost with foreign yards. The decision highlights ongoing challenges for UK shipbuilding in securing public contracts.
