China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) is progressing with its plan to build six very large ore carriers (VLOCs) of 343,000 deadweight tons (DWT) at China Merchants Industry Holdings Qingdao Shipyard. On 10 August 2026, CMES's subsidiary Hong Kong Ming Wah Shipping issued an invitation for the construction of these vessels, marking a significant step in the project first announced in July.
The total investment for the programme is capped at RMB 4.93 billion, with deliveries expected between 2029 and 2030. The 343,000 DWT design represents an upgrade from the established 325,000 DWT VLOCs, adding approximately 18,000 DWT of carrying capacity. This new series aligns closely with CMES’s long-term iron ore transportation strategy, including its expanding role in the Simandou supply chain and a proposed 25-year transportation agreement. For Qingdao Shipyard, this contract strengthens its position in the construction of ultra-large commercial vessels. Key technical details such as draught, propulsion, fuel strategy, and energy-saving systems are yet to be finalized. These specifications will be crucial in determining the efficiency and operational performance of the new VLOCs on long-haul iron ore trades.
