Fincantieri has secured a  contract from the Italian Navy for the construction of two new Multipurpose Combat Ships. The new contract aligns with the Italian Navy 's fleet renewal effort and will replace vessels initially intended for the Indonesian Navy. The contract, part of a broader Naval Act initiative, is managed by OCCAR, involving a collaboration between Fincantieri as the lead contractor and Leonardo as a partner. The agreement is valued at approximately 700 million euros. This cost includes previous work on vessels now redirected to Indonesia. The new ships, featuring a "Light Plus" configuration, will be manufactured at Fincantieri's facilities in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with scheduled deliveries in 2029 and 2030. These vessels will enhance the Italian Navy 's operational capabilities and maintain continuity in Italy’s shipbuilding sector. CEO Pierroberto Folgiero stated that the contract emphasizes the strategic importance of Fincantieri's capabilities in responding to the Italian Navy 's needs. He highlighted the contract's role in sustaining the national supply chain, production continuity, employment, and Italy's geopolitical standing in defense. The PPA-Multipurpose Combat Ships offer versatility for various missions, including patrol, rescue, and defense. The ships, 143 meters in length with a top speed of over 31 knots, can operate with a crew of 171 and support additional vessels and operations, reflecting a flexible design adaptable to evolving defense requirements.
