NYK Line, a leading shipping company, has finalized a contract for constructing and chartering a dual-fuel Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) capable of operating on methanol or traditional fuel oil for Idemitsu Tanker Co ., Ltd. This vessel, incorporating advanced technology, will be built by Nippon Shipyard Co ., Ltd., emphasizing sustainability in maritime transport. The VLCC will be environmentally friendly, adhering to the Malacca max class, a critical specification for navigating significant shipping channels. It was designed collaboratively by NYK Line, Idemitsu Tanker , IINO Kaiun Kaisha , Ltd., and Nippon Shipyard . Methanol is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cutting carbon dioxide output by approximately 15% when compared to heavy oil. Even greater reductions are anticipated with green methanol, utilizing bio or synthetic resources. NYK Line has committed to decarbonization, targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This new ship furthers that ambition through enhanced energy efficiency and reduced emissions. The vessel will feature a large shaft generator, further decreasing fuel consumption and environmental impact. Set to be ready by 2028, it marks a significant step towards sustainable crude oil shipping.
