In the early hours of January 16, 2025, the French-flagged container ship Eco Levant ran aground on the northern embankment of the Kiel Canal near the Rüsterbergen pilot station. The incident, reported at around 1:00 a.m., was caused by a hydraulic system defect that resulted in a machine failure, according to Neumünster police.
The grounding led to a complete closure of the Kiel Canal, forcing approximately 20 ships to suspend their voyages and wait in designated areas on both sides of the incident site.The tug Holtenau was dispatched from Kiel and successfully refloated the vessel by 8:00 a.m. The Eco Levant was then towed to the heavy-lift port in Osterrönfeld, where it safely moored by 9:30 a.m. Hydraulic repairs were completed the same day.The Eco Levant, built in 2024, is equipped with a dual-fuel engine that uses methanol and marine diesel.
