The container ship Maersk Halifax has emerged as the first large vessel in the industry to undergo a conversion for dual-fuel methanol operation, signifying a major step towards decarbonization in maritime shipping.
The retrofit, completed in 88 days at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard in China, involved significant modifications. The vessel's length was extended by 15 meters, bringing it to 368 meters, which increased its capacity to 15,690 TEU. Additionally, new methanol fuel tanks and a fuel supply system were installed to support its dual-fuel functionality. These upgrades were followed by rigorous sea trials, confirming the ship’s readiness for operation.
Following its return to service, Maersk Halifax has resumed operations on the Trans-Pacific route, highlighting Maersk’s dedication to sustainable practices. This milestone is a critical part of the company’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.Maersk emphasized that retrofitting existing vessels represents a viable pathway to reduce emissions in the near term, bridging the gap until new, fully green vessels become mainstream.
