
BW LNG has signed a contract with HD Hyundai to build four LNG carriers featuring a new three-tank design, departing from the conventional four-tank configuration used on standard 174,000-cubic-metre vessels. Despite retaining the same hull dimensions as a typical 174k carrier, the new ships will offer a larger cargo capacity of approximately 176,800 to 177,000 cubic metres. The vessels will be fitted with GTT Mark III Flex containment systems. Deliveries of the four ordered ships are scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2028 and the third quarter of 2029. According to information shared by Capt. Igor Maglyas on LinkedIn, the reduced number of tanks is expected to lower boil-off rates compared with standard 174,000-cubic-metre gas carriers. Engineers have addressed potential sloshing concerns associated with larger individual tank volumes by reinforcing the membrane structure within the containment system. The order represents a design shift in the LNG carrier segment, as shipbuilders and owners explore ways to increase cargo capacity without altering standard vessel dimensions. BW LNG and HD Hyundai's agreement marks the first instance of a three-tank configuration being applied to this class of gas carrier, with the design intended to improve cargo efficiency while managing boil-off and structural performance.
