Malaysian tanker owner Orkim has signed contracts for two additional product tankers to be built in China, committing about $37.6m as it continues fleet expansion following its stock market listing last year. The Bursa Malaysia-listed company said its wholly owned subsidiary Orkim Marine entered into shipbuilding agreements with Fujian Southeast Shipbuilding and Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding for two 9,000 dwt clean petroleum product tankers. The vessels are scheduled for completion by the end of 2028 and 2029 respectively. The combined investment is equivalent to MYR153.6m, which Orkim said will be financed through a mix of internal funds and borrowings, with the final structure dependent on loan drawdown timing and size. The new orders form part of a broader programme to add five more tankers between 2027 and 2029, including the previously contracted Orkim Ruby, a 14,500 dwt product carrier due for delivery next year. Orkim currently operates 21 vessels with a combined carrying capacity of 281,534 dwt, serving Malaysian and regional energy customers. The company has been expanding its chemical and product tanker exposure since listing on Bursa Malaysia in December 2025. Earlier this year it acquired the 13,850 dwt Rich Sunda for $24.2m and later agreed to purchase the 13,988 dwt Rong Yao Wu Zhou for CNY157m, equivalent to about $23.6m. Orkim chief executive Cheah Sin Bi said the group's investment decisions remain focused on securing suitable tonnage against long-term customer demand.
