The Liberia-flagged tanker LIPSI was damaged by unidentified munitions on 04 Oct 2026 while exiting the Strait of Hormuz, losing propulsion after sustaining damage to its engine room. The crew was reported safe and no pollution was detected, though the vessel began drifting roughly 3.9 nautical miles northeast of Jazirat Um Al Fayarin, prompting a navigational warning to nearby ships. The 115,000 DWT Aframax/LR2 tanker, operated by Greek shipowner George Prokopiou's Dynacom Tankers Management, had been delivered only 41 days earlier, on 24 Aug 2026, from the Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding yard, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship was completed 160 days ahead of schedule. Its registered owner is Hong Kong-based Sea 160 Leasing Co, with Chinese CMB Financial Leasing listed as the ultimate economic owner. The UK Maritime Trade Operations office, in advisory 150-26, confirmed a tanker captain's report of a strike by unknown munitions; maritime security firm Vanguard Tech identified the vessel as LIPSI. The type of munitions and the party responsible have not been identified. The incident marks the third Dynacom tanker attacked near Hormuz in under three months, following strikes on the ACHELOOS and KAVOMALEAS tankers in July. The China Shipowners' Association urged operators to strengthen bridge watches, monitor AIS and VHF communications, and reinforce security plans, while UKMTO reiterated calls for caution and reporting of suspicious activity in the strait.
