Kawasaki Heavy Industries has delivered the 86,700-cubic-metre LPG and ammonia carrier Aurora Borealis to Kumiai Navigation (Pte) Ltd, with the handover taking place on 29 Oct 2026. The vessel, built at Kawasaki's shipyard in Japan under hull number 1770, is the 14th in the company's latest generation of 86,700 m³ LPG/NH3 carriers. Compared with conventional 84,000 m³ vessels, the ship offers increased cargo capacity and features separate cargo tanks that allow simultaneous transport of LPG and ammonia. It measures 229.9 metres in length with a beam of 37.2 metres, a cargo tank capacity of 87,058 m³, a deadweight of 56,375 tonnes and a gross tonnage of 49,561. The vessel is powered by a Kawasaki-MAN B&W 6G60ME-C10.5-LGIP dual-fuel engine capable of running on LPG, and its propulsion system includes a shaft generator that supplies onboard electricity from the main engine, reducing reliance on auxiliary diesel generators during normal operation. Aurora Borealis also incorporates an ammonia-fuel conversion concept approved by ClassNK, which could allow the vessel to operate on ammonia following future modifications. It has a service speed of approximately 17 knots, carries a crew of 29, flies the Singapore flag and is classed by ClassNK. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the vessel was ordered by Kumiai Navigation (Pte) Ltd in June 2024, with delivery scheduled from 29 October 2026, the date on which the ship was in fact handed over. The delivery represents a further step in Kawasaki's development of alternative-fuel gas carriers aimed at supporting the evolving LPG and ammonia transportation markets.
