Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has placed an order for three additional 21,000-TEU container vessels with Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, according to market sources. The ships are scheduled for delivery between July 2028 and the end of 2029. The exact contract value has not been disclosed, but based on a market reference price of approximately $225 million per vessel of this size, the order is estimated at around $675 million. The deal extends a shipbuilding spree in which MSC, the world's largest container line, has committed more than $10 billion to ultra-large vessels over the past six months, including a recent order with Hengli Heavy Industries for 20 ships of 24,000 TEU valued at nearly $5 billion, for delivery in 2029 and 2030. According to Alphaliner data, as of the end of October 2026 MSC's operational fleet stood at approximately 7.47 million TEU, representing 21.5% of global liner capacity, while its orderbook had reached approximately 3.379 million TEU, or 45.2% of global container ship orders. Combined, MSC's operational and on-order capacity has surpassed 10 million TEU, a record for the company. Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding has announced more than 50 new orders this year across container ships, oil tankers, FPSO hulls and cruise ship projects, with deliveries scheduled through 2030.
