Monaco-based Transocean Maritime Agencies has ordered two 50,000 dwt chemical and product tankers at China's Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), expanding its newbuilding programme into a new vessel type. The contract, recently signed with the CSSC-controlled yard, marks GSI's first order from a Monaco-based shipowner. Financial terms, delivery dates and propulsion specifications have not been disclosed. Transocean is a family-controlled shipping company established in the 1960s by the late Guenther Neunhoeffer and now led by Ruth McLoughlin. The company operates a fleet of around 15 vessels, primarily bulk carriers and tankers, and has been pursuing a broader fleet expansion strategy across several Chinese shipyards. The tanker order follows Transocean's entry into the containership market last year. In October 2025, the company emerged as the buyer behind two-plus-two 1,930 teu feeder newbuildings at Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, named Ajax C and Apollo C, scheduled for delivery in 2028. Shipbuilding sources have also linked Transocean to a further two 3,100 teu containerships at New Dayang Shipbuilding, where the owner previously ordered two 64,000 dwt ultramax bulkers in 2024. The latest contract adds to a busy period for GSI in the MR tanker segment, which has recently secured orders from Geneva-based Advantage Tankers and Greek owner Top Ships.
