Shipbuilder ASENAV S.A. has completed construction of the Magellan Discoverer, newbuild hull number NB 193, which departed the company's shipyard for the final time this week ahead of delivery to owner Antarctica21. The vessel will head to Antarctica, where it is set to operate. The project took nearly three years to complete, according to Germán Schacht Kossmann, who shared details of the delivery on LinkedIn. He described the build as involving significant effort and challenges, crediting the ASENAV team for ensuring the vessel was delivered properly. The ship's departure drew a public send-off, with shipyard staff gathering on the quay and residents of Valdivia lining the route to Corral to wave farewell as the vessel sailed out. ASENAV, based in Valdivia, Chile, is known for building specialized vessels including expedition and research ships. Antarctica21 is expected to take formal delivery of the Magellan Discoverer by the end of this week, after which the vessel will transit to Antarctic waters to begin operations. No further technical specifications or details on the vessel's intended service itinerary were disclosed. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the order for the cruise vessel was placed on 1 September 2023, with a scheduled delivery window from 27 October 2026.
