SAAM Towage has officially christened the SAAM Petrel tugboat in Arica, Chile, where it will support port operations. The ceremony brought together local authorities, port representatives and SAAM employees, with longtime employee Jenny Muñoz, who has worked at SAAM for 25 years, serving as the vessel's godmother. The SAAM Petrel is the first tugboat in the company's Chilean fleet to meet IMO Tier III emissions standards, which are designed to significantly reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The vessel has an 80-tonne bollard pull capacity and will assist with ship berthing and unberthing operations at the port. It was designed by Robert Allan and built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey, forming part of SAAM Towage's broader fleet renewal programme. Hernán Gómez, CEO of SAAM, said the christening reflected the company's purpose of driving sustainable global trade and said the investment would help keep Chile connected to global markets through more efficient, reliable and environmentally responsible services. Javiera Hevia, Southern Cone Cluster Manager for SAAM Towage, highlighted the vessel's technology and safety capabilities, saying it combined advanced systems with the crew's ongoing commitment to high safety standards in daily operations.
