
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has named the world's first LNG carrier fitted with Wind Challenger solid sails, the Fujian Sailor, ahead of its delivery to US major Chevron under a long-term time charter by the end of September 2026. The naming ceremony took place on 10 Sep 2026 at the Hanwha Ocean Co. shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The 295-metre vessel has a capacity of 174,000 cubic metres of LNG and is equipped with two units of the Wind Challenger hard sail wind-assisted propulsion system, designed to cut fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions compared with conventional propulsion alone. The telescoping rigid sails, made of fiber-reinforced plastic, consist of three panels each and stand approximately 49 metres above the deck near the bow when fully extended, with a width of about 15 metres apiece. The ship also uses an Everllence (MAN Energy Solutions) main engine, air lubrication for the hull, and shaft generators. The application marks the first use of a design concept approved in 2024, following a risk assessment by MOL and its partners covering sail placement, visibility impact, emergency operating procedures and other safety considerations. France's Gaztransport et Technigaz, which holds patents on the LNG containment technology, assessed the effect of the sail installation on the cargo tanks.
