Greek shipowner Carlova Maritime has ordered two 114,000-dwt Aframax tankers from Japan's Imabari Shipbuilding, expanding its newbuilding programme. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2029 and the first quarter of 2030, though the contract price has not been disclosed. Japanese shipbuilding sources indicated that part of the construction work may be subcontracted to other Japanese yards. The order represents Carlova Maritime's first newbuilding contract in Japan since the company was separated from Greek owner Samos Steamship. Carlova Maritime's existing fleet remains heavily weighted toward Japanese-built tonnage, including the Aframax Phaedr, built in 2025, and Penelope, built in 2023, both constructed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries. The company has also broadened its newbuilding activity to South Korea and China. Its current orderbook includes two 300,000-dwt VLCCs at Hanwha Ocean in South Korea, and at China's Hengli Heavy Industries, an 82,000-dwt bulk carrier and a 114,000-dwt Aframax/LR2 tanker, in addition to the two new Imabari Aframaxes. The latest order underscores Carlova Maritime's continued reliance on Japanese shipbuilders even as it diversifies its construction base across multiple countries, reflecting a broader trend among Greek owners to spread newbuilding contracts across leading Asian shipyards.
