The Ministry of Shipping has granted in-principle approval for the Matarbari Green Dockyard and Shipbuilding Facility, a $1 billion project planned as a public-private partnership. The project is currently undergoing appraisal and is expected to be financed by Australia’s AIS Marine Investments. The facility aims to provide domestic repair
services for large commercial vessels, reducing the need for costly trips to shipyards in Singapore or China. This development is projected to generate approximately 1,300 direct jobs and 2,600 indirect jobs, contributing significantly to local employment. The establishment of the Matarbari dockyard aligns with efforts to enhance the country’s maritime infrastructure and self-reliance in ship maintenance and construction. If completed, it will serve as a strategic asset for the shipping industry, supporting economic growth and operational efficiency. The project’s appraisal phase will determine the final investment and operational details before moving forward with construction and implementation.
