China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) has approved an order for 10 new vessels to be built at domestic shipyards, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2029. The order includes five Aframax-class oil tankers, four 1,800-TEU container ships, and one 210,000-DWT Newcastlemax bulk carrier. The five Aframax tankers will be constructed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Dalian Shipbuilding
Industry Co., Ltd. These vessels will feature new-generation energy-saving and eco-friendly technologies, including scrubbers and shaft generators, and are part of an Aframax-tanker pooling scheme established with leading global oil companies. Deliveries for these tankers will begin in 2029. The container ships and the Newcastlemax bulk carrier, all equipped with scrubbers, shaft generators, and high-efficiency antifouling paint, aim to upgrade CMES's container and dry-bulk fleets, secure early-delivery berth slots, and enhance long-term fleet profitability. These vessels are expected to be handed over in 2028. Additionally, CMES plans to sign shipbuilding agreements for five vessels with related-party shipyards affiliated with China Merchants Group Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., with a total investment capped at RMB 1.51 billion.
