Daito Corporation, a subsidiary of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE), has announced the construction of a 260 gross ton-class electric tugboat, EV Tugboat No. 2, scheduled for delivery between January and July 2028. The vessel will be built by Hongawara Shipyard Co., Ltd. (Fukuyama Yard) with Kawasaki Heavy Industries providing propulsion and control systems, and TOA Corporation designing shoreside charging equipment. EV Tugboat No. 2 will feature a
4,400 PS motor, an upgrade from the 3,600 PS motor in its predecessor, EV Tugboat No. 1, currently under construction. It will employ a new DC power distribution system and a condition monitoring system to optimize power supply and reduce fossil fuel consumption. The tug is designed for versatile towage operations in Tokyo Bay and aims to serve as a standard model for future electric tugboats. This project is part of Japan’s Innovative Navigation Efficiency and Transition to Non-Fossil Energy program, jointly supported by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. It aligns with the “K” LINE Group’s Environmental Vision 2050, which promotes low-carbon and decarbonized maritime operations. Together with EV Tugboat No. 1, the new vessel will contribute to the development of carbon-neutral ports in Japan.
