China is developing the Open-Sea Floating Island, a 30-story semi-submersible deep-sea research platform with a displacement of 86,000 tons, designed to operate at depths of up to 10,000 meters. Scheduled for deployment by 2030, the platform can withstand extreme weather and accommodate up
to 238 people for about four months without resupply. Developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it features six shipborne laboratories and a shore-based support system for operation and maintenance. Officially intended for marine science and typhoon forecasting, the platform is also seen as a strategic asset for military applications, including seabed mapping to enhance submarine warfare capabilities. This development aligns with China's broader efforts to map ocean floors in key regions such as the Pacific, Indian, and Arctic oceans, supporting both scientific research and naval operations.
