Seaspan Corporation, a prominent containership lessor based in Hong Kong, has formally entered into a letter of intent with Hudong- Zhonghua Shipbuilding for the construction of a series of 8,300 TEU containerships. The agreement also includes the development of an 18,600 cbm bunkering vessel.
The ceremonial signing took place on May 20, 2025, amid a series of milestones set by Hudong- Zhonghua Shipbuilding . These included naming a new LNG carrier, launching two additional LNG carriers, and initiating construction on a dual-fuel containership for another client, all on the same day.
This new fleet of 8,300 TEU vessels is designed for medium-sized operations, optimized for feeder and ocean routes, and emphasizes energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the parent of Hudong-Zhonghua, affirms that the vessels will set a greener standard in shipping.
The announced 18,600 cbm bunkering vessel is notable for its energy-efficient design and minimal emissions, marking it as one of the largest of its kind globally. This highlights an ongoing trend towards cleaner maritime operations within the industry.
Prior to this announcement, Seaspan Corporation committed to building six 11,400 TEU scrubber-fitted containerships at a different Chinese shipyard, expected for delivery between 2027 and 2028. These collaborative efforts reflect Seaspan’s strategic focus on expanding its fleet with technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable ships.
