Saronic Technologies, a Texas-based company, announced on Tuesday its ambitious plan to build an autonomous shipyard, dubbed Port Alpha, backed by $600 million in private funding. The venture aims to bolster the production of medium- and large-class autonomous surface vessels, catering to increased Pentagon demand for unmanned ships. CEO Dino Mavrookas described the upcoming facility as the world's most advanced shipyard, emphasizing the project's domestic roots and outright ambition. Although the site has yet to be determined, Saronic is exploring potential locations, focusing on Texas and the Gulf Coast. While the company remained tight-lipped about the total cost, Mavrookas noted that billions of dollars would be invested over the project's lifecycle, with expectations of operation commencing within five years. The intent is to expedite shipbuilding production lines to meet the growing demand for unmanned vessels. Founded in 2022, Saronic has already developed three uncrewed vessels and is valued at $4 billion. The company sees Port Alpha as a key element in the U.S. Navy's strategy to increase shipbuilding capacity, aligning with the Navy's 30-year plan to expand its fleet and incorporate more unmanned vessels. Amid challenges faced by traditional shipbuilders, Saronic believes its novel approach, distinct manufacturing techniques, and innovative technology will alleviate burdens and drive forward the Army's objectives for uncrewed systems, as highlighted by Chief Commercial Officer Rob Lehman.
