Mitsubishi Shipbuilding , a part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, has announced the receipt of additional orders for three methanol-fueled roll-on/roll-off (RORO) cargo ships. The orders come from Toyofuji Shipping , Miyazaki Sangyo Kaiun , and Nichitoku Kisen . These ships are set to be constructed at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture, with completion expected from fiscal 2028. The newly ordered ships boast significant eco-friendly advancements. Each vessel features a high-performance dual-fuel engine capable of operating on both methanol and heavy fuel oil, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by over 20% compared to existing heavy oil vessels. With a length of approximately 168 meters and the ability to load around 2,300 vehicles, these ships represent a significant leap in both transport capacity and environmental performance. The initiative aligns with the ongoing shift toward sustainable marine transportation, addressing societal issues such as CO2 reduction, vehicle loading capacity, and crew working conditions.
