Damen Shipyards Group announced on February 13 the introduction of their latest Logistics Support Ships (LSS), the LSS 9000 and LSS 11000. In a discussion with Piet van Rooij, Commercial Manager of Defence & Security at Damen, it was revealed that while no firm orders have been placed yet, there are ongoing talks with potential clients. These ships aim to serve both as additions to fleets and as replacements for outdated vessels.

The new LSS models are designed for efficient logistics support, transferring essential supplies like fuel, munitions, and provisions. The objective is for the LSSs to become pivotal in naval logistics, allowing fleets to remain operational during extended deployments. With two sizes available, the LSS 9000 and LSS 11000 measure 127 and 140 meters, respectively, and offer a speed of 18 knots with a crew of 57, boasting an endurance of up to 30 days.

The ships feature advanced technology, including a Surveillance Radar and tactical data links, and are outfitted with a variety of weapons and defensive systems. They offer versatility with a modular design that allows for easy configuration and upgrades. The vessels support NATO-standard replenishment and can be used for combat, humanitarian missions, and training exercises, emphasizing their hybrid platform capabilities.
Recently, Damen completed the Combat Support Ship (CSS) Den Helder for the Dutch Navy, now undergoing sea trials. The LSS, while less sophisticated than the CSS, is suitable for midsize navies, noted van Rooij. Designed under commercial regulations, the LSS complies with environmentally friendly standards, making it a robust and adaptable vessel.
The Dutch Navy is a potential candidate to order the LSS, as they expand their support vessel fleet. Van Rooij highlighted that the LSS provides an affordable, environmentally safer option for navies transitioning from older, single-hull configurations. Interest may extend to South American countries, where shipyards are actively producing support vessels, potentially attracting the Argentine navy to explore regaining logistical capabilities with Damen's LSS offerings.
