**Deendayal Port Authority** (DPA) in Gujarat is spearheading the development of a new shipbuilding cluster near Kandla, aiming to attract global private shipbuilders. The project plans to utilize 2,000 acres in Kutch district, targeting the construction of 50 very large crude carriers (VLCC) annually, each with a 3.2 lakh dead weight tonnage (DWT) capacity. The ambitious Rs 27,000-crore greenfield venture is set to be developed in Veera village, near Tuna Tekra. While a private partner will construct the shipyard, **Deendayal Port Authority** will provide essential land and infrastructure. A 1.2-km waterfront and connectivity will be available on a 30-year lease, facilitating the establishment of this cluster. This new cluster will become the 11th shipyard in Gujarat, adding to the state's existing but underutilized shipbuilding capacity of over 5.4 lakh DWT. Several previous shipyards, including facilities by **ABG Shipyard** and **Pipavav Shipyard**, have shut down in recent years. Despite these setbacks, the shipbuilding sector in Gujarat sees renewed interest, as evidenced by proposals at the Vibrant Gujarat summit, with companies like **ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel** and **Mandovi Drydocks** exploring new opportunities.
