Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has taken delivery of 'MAIZURU KAZENOMAI', an LNG dual-fuel coal carrier built as a dedicated vessel for Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. The ship is Japan's first coal carrier fitted with the Wind Challenger hard sail wind-assisted propulsion system. A naming and delivery ceremony was held at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., the vessel's builder, to mark the occasion. The vessel will transport coal to Kansai Electric Power's Maizuru Power Plant, supporting stable electricity supply. It is equipped with a dual-fuel main engine capable of running primarily on LNG, alongside the Wind Challenger system jointly developed by MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding. Compared with conventional heavy fuel oil-powered ships, the vessel is expected to cut GHG and NOx emissions and significantly reduce SOx emissions through LNG use. The combined effect of the LNG dual-fuel engine and the Wind Challenger system is projected to lower CO2 emissions by up to approximately 30%. The delivery supports MOL's medium- to long-term environmental targets under its MOL Group Environmental Vision - BLUE ACTION 2035 Phase 2, which aims for net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. As part of this strategy, MOL plans to deploy 25 Wind Challenger-equipped vessels by 2030 and 80 by 2035. MAIZURU KAZENOMAI measures 234.98 metres in length overall with a beam of 38.00 metres and a deadweight tonnage of 95,311 tonnes. Built in 2026, the vessel flies the flag of the Republic of Liberia.
