CMB.TECH's Mineral Europa, described as the world's first ammonia-powered dry bulk carrier, has entered service following its maiden voyage, with Anglo-Eastern detailing its role in the vessel's development and preparation. The 210,000 DWT Newcastlemax was built by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding and features a WinGD dual-fuel ammonia engine paired with a Sun Rui Ammonia Fuel Supply System, allowing it to run on either ammonia or conventional marine fuel as bunkering infrastructure for the alternative fuel continues to develop. Anglo-Eastern's involvement began in 2018, when its technical services division started evaluating alternative fuels with CMB.TECH, first examining hydrogen before shifting focus to ammonia. By 2020, Anglo-Eastern Technical Services (AETS) was developing the ship's safety philosophy, fuel arrangements and preliminary engineering, with the design receiving Approvals in Principle from Lloyd's Register and ABS in 2021. A key challenge was integrating ammonia storage, double-wall piping, ventilation, leak detection, containment and emergency shutdown systems without reducing cargo capacity. Anglo-Eastern also supported newbuilding supervision, technical management and crew preparation, developing vessel-specific operating, bunkering, maintenance and emergency procedures alongside training that used a three-dimensional digital twin and a fuel supply simulator. Senior officers took part in shipyard and sea trials. CMB.TECH CEO Alexander Saverys called the vessel's entry into service a milestone in the company's decarbonization strategy, adding that further ammonia-powered ships are expected to follow.
