TOP Ships has agreed to acquire four project companies holding newbuilding contracts for 49,940-dwt Ice Class 1A MR tankers at Guangzhou Shipyard International, expanding its MR newbuilding programme to 14 vessels upon completion. The ships are scheduled for delivery between June 2029 and March 2030. The equity acquisition is valued at approximately $34.95 million, while the underlying shipbuilding contracts total $198 million. Financing from a Chinese lessor is being finalised to cover approximately 85% of construction instalments, with closing subject to financing and customary conditions. Principal charter terms have been agreed for seven firm years from delivery, with up to three optional years; if all extensions are exercised, the four vessels could generate approximately $316.9 million in gross charter revenue. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the deal was reported on 7 Oct 2026, with the four conventional-fuelled MR tankers priced at roughly $49.5 million each, consistent with the total contract value. The transaction reflects a broader reallocation of capital by TOP Ships toward its core shipping operations. The company previously cancelled a proposed Dubai residential property investment, redirecting a $23.5 million refund toward an earlier three-MR acquisition. It also intends to sell its megayacht, Para Bellvm, and reinvest the proceeds into tanker assets. With long-term employment being arranged ahead of delivery, the latest deal underscores TOP Ships' strategy of consolidating investment in product tankers rather than diversifying into non-shipping assets, as it builds out a larger MR fleet geared toward ice-class trading routes.
