Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the Grande Pacifico, its 13th pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) designed to be adaptable to ammonia fuel. The vessel is the lead ship of a series of five sister ships built by China Merchants Industry Jiangsu Shipyard. With a vehicle carrying capacity of approximately 9,800 CEU, the Grande Pacifico is the largest PCTC roll-on/roll-off vessel currently in Grimaldi's fleet. It is fitted with large-capacity lithium
batteries, solar panels and an onshore power connection system, features intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact during operation. According to Grimaldi, the ship's fuel consumption is around 50% lower than that of previous-generation PCTCs. The vessel has also been designed with provisions for future ammonia fuel retrofitting, allowing it to switch to the zero-carbon fuel at a later stage. This is intended to support further reductions in carbon emissions and align the ship with the shipping industry's broader shift toward alternative marine fuels. The Grande Pacifico combines a streamlined hull for efficiency, energy-saving technologies including batteries, solar power and shore power facilities, and pre-planned capacity for future fuel upgrades. The delivery forms part of Grimaldi's ongoing fleet renewal program, which the company has linked to its strategy of pursuing transport efficiency, technological innovation and lower-carbon shipping operations.
