AYK Energy Ltd. has secured a contract to supply batteries for nine new ROPax vessels ordered by Grimaldi Group, marking one of the largest marine battery deals in European short-sea shipping. The vessels will be equipped with a combined 18,657 kWh capacity from nine 2,073 kWh OrionAN LFP batteries. Six ships will operate
in the Mediterranean under Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines, while three will serve Baltic routes with Finnlines. Scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030, the vessels will be built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai. These ships are the first methanol-capable ROPax designed for the Mediterranean, featuring multi-fuel readiness including methanol, biodiesel, battery power, and shore power connectivity. The integrated efficiency package also includes optimized hull design, waste heat recovery, and silicon hull coatings, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 50% per cargo unit compared to current vessels. This $1.5 billion fleet renewal underscores a growing commitment to hybrid-electric maritime solutions in Europe.
