Estonian State Fleet has signed a EUR 50 million contract with Polish shipyard CRIST S.A. to build Estonia's first fully electric ferry. The 100-meter ice-class 1B vessel, designed by LMG Marin, will serve the Virtsu–Kuivastu route starting in late 2028. It will accommodate 380 passengers and 110 cars, powered by shore-charged green electricity stored in a 3 MWh battery system, with biodiesel generators as backup for extreme conditions. The ferry will feature next-generation azimuth thrusters at both ends to enhance maneuverability and energy efficiency. The project is partially funded by the EU Modernization Fund, which covers EUR 28 million of the total cost.
