Tasmania has unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in sustainable shipping with the launch of the China Zorrilla (hull 096), the world’s largest fully electric ship. Measuring 130 metres in length, the vessel can accommodate 2,100 passengers and 225 cars, all powered by over 250 tonnes of batteries and more than 40 MWh of energy storage—the largest maritime battery system to date. The China Zorrilla operates without diesel engines or exhaust emissions, eliminating fuel oil pollution and significantly reducing noise pollution that can harm marine life. Successful tests on the River Derwent have paved the way for final sea trials, demonstrating that commercial-scale electric shipping is now a practical reality. Overcoming challenges such as battery cooling, fire safety, and weight distribution, the ship stands as a major milestone in decarbonizing maritime transport and cutting shipping’s global CO₂ emissions. Built in Australia, the China Zorrilla is now poised to depart from Tasmania and lead the way toward cleaner seas.
