The Canadian Coast Guard has released new images revealing further hull damage to the grounded container ship MSC Baltic III near Cedar Cove, Newfoundland. The vessel, which ran aground in February 2025 after losing power during severe weather on its way to Corner Brook, has suffered increased buckling of hull plating and a lower stern after being battered by heavy surf and winter storms in recent weeks. Salvage equipment onboard was also damaged. All crew were safely rescued by helicopter shortly after the incident. Salvage teams have already removed more than 1,600 cubic metres of fuel and pollutants, along with hundreds of containers. However, 65 containers remain submerged and inaccessible due to ongoing poor weather. Cleanup efforts are hampered by winter conditions, with small amounts of oily debris and tar balls washing ashore. Experts warn that scrapping the vessel in place may soon be the only viable option, but authorities are currently focused on site monitoring, pollution management, and safety.
