China is set to revolutionize maritime shipping with plans to build a 14,000-TEU container ship powered by a thorium-based Molten Salt Reactor (MSR). Developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), the vessel will operate without conventional fuel, using a closed-loop MSR system capable of generating hundreds of megawatts of thermal energy. The design phase is expected to complete in 2026, with construction possibly starting later this decade. If successful, this would be the world’s first container ship powered by thorium-based molten salt technology, bringing significant safety, efficiency, and scalability advantages over traditional reactors. However, the project faces international regulatory challenges as China pushes the boundaries of nuclear innovation.
