On October 30, COSCO SHIPPING Development Co., Ltd. (SSE: 601866) revealed two landmark shipbuilding deals totaling RMB 12.4 billion (approximately USD 1.7 billion), marking one of the company’s largest single investment projects to date. Through its subsidiaries, COSCO SHIPPING Development ordered 6 VLCCs (307,000 DWT each) from CSSC’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) and 23 bulk carriers (87,000 DWT each) from COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s Dalian yard. The VLCCs will feature methanol + LNG dual-fuel-ready designs, while the bulkers will be methanol-ready, supporting the company's green fleet renewal. Deliveries are scheduled from April 2027 to late 2028. Both vessel series will operate within the COSCO SHIPPING Group, with the VLCCs to be time-chartered to COSCO SHIPPING Energy Transportation and the bulkers to COSCO SHIPPING Bulk. This coordinated 'build–lease–operate' model exemplifies the group’s integrated approach to shipbuilding, leasing, and operation. The contracts are structured for staged payments, optimizing liquidity and investment efficiency. The move also enhances COSCO SHIPPING’s green transformation and ship leasing portfolio. In tandem with the announcement, COSCO SHIPPING Development reported solid Q3 2025 financials, with RMB 19.57 billion in revenue and RMB 1.39 billion in net profit, underscoring its ability to support large-scale investments.
