On July 20, 2025, the Zhedai Yuyang 60001, a near 30-year-old Panamax bulk carrier, was officially launched as the world’s first ocean-going fish farming vessel. Formerly built in 1996, the ship has been repurposed into a state-of-the-art marine farm equipped with seven breeding chambers and advanced open-sea technology capable of holding 80,000 cubic meters of water. The vessel is fitted with an intelligent management system to optimize environmental conditions and operations, marking a breakthrough in sustainable ship reuse. Senhai Muge (Zhejiang) Marine Technology, the company behind this initiative, plans to convert three additional Capesize bulk carriers into fish farming vessels, aiming to expand their fleet and lead in marine aquaculture innovation. With over 1,500 suitable aging ships in China alone, this model could create a trillion-dollar market for sustainable seafood, setting a new standard in ship recycling and green shipping.
