VICTORIA, BC - BC Ferries has announced its decision to contract China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyards (CMI Weihai) to build four New Major Vessels. This choice follows an extensive global procurement process, aimed at renewing BC Ferries’ aging fleet. The selection criteria emphasized technical capabilities, ferry-building experience, and cost efficiency. CMI Weihai is recognized for its proficiency in constructing passenger and vehicle ferries, having built vessels for international operators like Stena RoRo and Grimaldi Lines . Their experience meeting Transport Canada regulatory requirements enhances confidence in their competency to deliver these vessels as per BC Ferries’ expectations. BC Ferries has outlined significant local investment plans involving over $230 million on maintenance in the first decade of service for the newly approved vessels, projecting over $1 billion in economic benefits over their estimated 45-year lifespan. The project is expected to contribute significantly to employment and economic growth in British Columbia. The new vessels, part of BC Ferries’ fleet renewal strategy, aim to replace aging ships and enhance system resilience. With hybrid propulsion systems, these vessels are designed to reduce environmental impact while providing increased capacity and improved amenities for passengers.
