Hapag-Lloyd has entered into agreements with two prominent Chinese shipbuilders, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group and New Times Shipbuilding Company Ltd., to construct 24 advanced container ships, a strategic investment aimed at enhancing its fleet efficiency and sustainability. The contracts involve 12 vessels, each with a capacity of 16,800 TEU, from Yangzijiang, intended to bolster Hapag-Lloyd’s existing service capacity. An additional 12 vessels, with a capacity of 9,200 TEU, will be built by New Times Shipbuilding to replace older ships reaching the end of their operational lifespan.

These newbuildings, slated for delivery between 2027 and 2029, will feature cutting-edge, low-emission dual-fuel engines capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as biomethane, a sustainable option that could potentially reduce CO2e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional fuels. Additionally, the ships are designed to be ammonia-ready, aligning with future green fuel advancements.

The total investment for this expansion is approximately USD 4 billion, backed by a committed long-term financing of USD 3 billion. With a combined capacity of 312,000 TEU, this fleet renewal marks a substantial step in Hapag-Lloyd’s environmental strategy and underscores its commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of global shipping.
