Seaspan Corporation has made a significant return to shipbuilding with an ambitious order for 27 dual-fuel vessels, signaling a major expansion of its fleet. This initiative, disclosed by parent company Atlas in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, includes a newbuilding program comprising vessels with capacities ranging from 9,000 TEU to 17,000 TEU.

In June 2023, Seaspan commissioned unnamed shipbuilders to construct a series of vessels under 13 contracts, including four methanol and LNG dual-fuel 9,000 TEU ships and five 17,000 TEU vessels capable of operating on LNG. These contracts have been novated to specific nominees, with Seaspan set to take delivery of the ships on bareboat charters and subsequently lease them to liner companies on long-term agreements upon delivery in 2027 and 2028.

Additionally, four other LNG dual-fuel 9,000 TEU vessels were ordered and novated to a customer, while five more 17,000 TEU and five 16,000 TEU newbuilds, all featuring the same fuel capabilities, have been secured under charters with an undisclosed liner.While the identities of the counterparties remain confidential, industry sources have linked New Times and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding as the potential builders, with Maersk and Ocean Network Express (ONE) speculated as the likely charterers.
