Piraeus-based Venergy Maritime, led by Vyron Vasileiadis, has exercised shipbuilding options to expand its VLCC orderbook to four vessels at Hengli Shipbuilding in China, doubling its initial commitment. The rapidly growing Greek owner had placed its debut order for very large crude carriers earlier, and the newly exercised options confirm two additional units at the Chinese yard. The contract signing was marked at Hengli's facilities, with Venergy principal Vyron Vasileiadis and Hengli Shipbuilding executive Chen Hanlun formalising the agreement. The move underscores continued appetite among Greek shipowners for VLCC tonnage amid a broader wave of newbuilding activity in the tanker sector. Hengli Shipbuilding, one of China's major shipyards, has secured a steady flow of orders from international owners as yard capacity across Asia remains tight heading into 2027 and beyond delivery slots. Venergy Maritime's expansion reflects a pattern seen across the Greek shipping community this year, with owners moving to lock in newbuilding capacity at Chinese and other Asian yards as freight rates and asset values in the crude tanker segment have strengthened. Further details on delivery schedules and contract values for the four VLCCs were not disclosed.
