Meyer Turku has christened Valpas, the second multipurpose offshore patrol vessel it is building for the Finnish Border Guard. The ceremony took place on 30 Oct 2026 at the Uusikaupunki shipyard, where Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen served as the vessel's godmother and broke a bottle of champagne against its hull in keeping with maritime tradition. Ville Saksi, Deputy CEO of Meyer Turku, described offshore patrol vessels as highly complex, multipurpose ships requiring extensive expertise and close cooperation between the customer and the wider project network. He said the christening of the second vessel marks an important milestone in the programme, adding that work continues to deliver ships meeting the Finnish Border Guard's high requirements and supporting Finland's maritime security for years to come. The new offshore patrol vessels are designed to be low-emission and energy-efficient, with each ship expected to operate at sea for approximately 330 days a year. Valpas is the second in a series being constructed for the Finnish Border Guard, following an earlier vessel built under the same programme. The project reflects continued investment in Finland's maritime surveillance and security capabilities in the Baltic Sea region.
