Trafigura, the global commodities trader, has once again turned to China for additional very large crude carrier (VLCC) newbuilds. According to multiple brokers, Trafigura has placed an order for three more 319,000 dwt VLCCs with Jiangsu New Hantong Ship Heavy Industry. The financial details of this latest series of orders have not been disclosed. These new vessels will be equipped with scrubbers and will be ammonia-ready, indicating a focus on environmental compliance and future fuel adaptability.

Earlier this year, Trafigura made its debut VLCC order at the same shipyard, securing two ships in response to a market shortage of modern supertanker tonnage. This shortage has resulted in only a limited number of units being scheduled for delivery this year and next. The initial newbuilds from this order are anticipated to join Trafigura's fleet in July and September of 2026. The latest trio of VLCCs ordered is expected to be delivered in 2027, further enhancing Trafigura’s fleet capabilities. This move underscores Trafigura's strategic response to market dynamics and its commitment to expanding its shipping capacity with state-of-the-art vessels.
